‘Bette and Joan’, a play by Anton Burge.

The action for this play takes place in Hollywood in 1962.
Joan Crawford brought a script to Bette Davies for a low budget film called ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?’ The rest as they say is history.

Once grand dames of Hollywood, by 1962 arch-rivals Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were in danger of becoming has-beens, and then an opportunity came along to appear together for the very first time. The movie was ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

‘Bette and Joan’ depicts the two stars in adjacent dressing rooms between takes on the set of Baby Jane.

While Joan manages her anxiety by lacing her Pepsi with vodka and signing photographs for her beloved fans, Bette chains smokes and muses on her love life and her ability to ‘pick a good script.’ But never a good man!

Behind the bitching and practical jokes we see each woman's insecurities and regrets. Their rivalry is revealed to be underpinned by grudging respect as they both attempt their new roles in life as well as in their careers.

Their rivalry leads to one of the most notorious public feuds in Hollywood history. Anton Burge captures it brilliantly.

‘Bette and Joan’ has adult themes and contains strong language.

Jack Chesney loves Kitty Verdun and Charley loves Miss Amy Spettigue. They invite the ladies to meet Charley's wealthy aunt from Brazil, "where the nuts come from". Cancelling her visit at the last minute, the millionaire aunt sends the boys into cataclysmic confusion. What do they do now? The problem is solved by drafting their feckless Oxford undergrad pal into a black satin skirt, bloomers and wig. As "Charley's Aunt", this charming frump is introduced to the ladies, to Jack's father and to Stephen Spettigue, Amy's guardian. When the real aunt turns up, classic comic confusion ensues.
