Harold Hewitt creates life-scale immersive pictures of the world we’re all familiar with. His images are of local scenes, but sometimes a narrative emerges that he didn’t expect – perhaps referencing history, religion, poetry, art history, mythology or even present-day issues. What began as a familiar local scene becomes a stage for a drama, or sometimes a metaphor for a bigger message.
Hear from the artist himself to find out more about these works and the creative process behind them.

Join local historian Dr Stephen Roberts at Williamson Art Gallery & Museum to discover what a painting tells us about Birkenhead during the Great War.
This talk will focus on the painting ‘The Royal Visit of Their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary to Cammell Laird, Birkenhead, 14th May 1917’. It was painted by official Australian war artist and maritime art specialist Arthur James Wetherall Burgess (1879-1957), and British artist, Edward Frederick Skinner (1865-1924) who added the portraits of many of those present.
The picture captures a seminal event in the history of Birkenhead and of Great Britain, at a time when the country was fighting for its survival during the Great War. Everything and everybody in the painting can be identified and their relevant stories told, leading to a remarkably detailed reconstruction of the event itself, as well as profound insights into local life just over a century ago.
The painting’s purpose and impact will be discussed and numerous surprising discoveries, which challenge some of our deeply rooted and yet erroneous beliefs about Britain during the Great War will be expounded. The talk is based on recent and original research which went into Dr Roberts’ PhD these about Wirral during the Great War.
